Goober's Story: "Find the Kitty!"
The Amazing Pure Gold Sam, Brando and Salsa.
What an amazing tale of the incredible Brando and Salsa finding my kitty Goober. I cannot thank Sam and her dogs enough for finding my best friend. If I had not experienced it, I would have not believed it myself.
On a hot and humid Saturday night in August my two kitties were having fun outside by the patio. Nestle, the 2-year old was chasing a lightening bug...his constant companion, Goober at his side. Nestle ran and Goober followed. It was dark, and both black cats blended into the darkness, out of sight. Both cats were called, but only Nestle returned. That night we went out every hour from nightfall to daybreak calling for Goober. He did not return. Little did we know he was on an odyssey.
Sunday came and went with no sign of Goober. It was one of the hotter days of the year, and it was certain that the solid black cat was having difficulty. On similar days, he panted from the minute the sun hit his back until he escaped back to his air-conditioned home. Many hours were spent looking for him. One hundred fliers were distributed, anyone who we saw was asked to help find him. A sinking feeling permeated Nanette and I as the sun got hotter and the search yielded nothing. Sunday night...still no Goober.
It was on Sunday night Googling everything about finding a lost cat. In a short article I saw something about pet finders. I investigated further. I found a couple of related web sites, and kept looking. Finally, a hit...a petfinder in Hampstead, Maryland. I knew nothing of this service, what it was and what they did. I read on. Feeling a sense of fear for my kitty I called Laura in Hampstead. She called me back Monday afternoon after a day searching and going to the animal shelter. Laura was leaving for Minnesota that evening, my hope faded a tad more. She did suggest that I call Sam. What wonderful fortune!
Sam called Monday evening. She said she could come over Tuesday morning first thing. I was elated. Hope again sprung forth. I had no idea of what might or would happen.
Tuesday morning brought forth Sam and her astounding dog team. Brando and Salsa. Both dogs couldn’t have been more excited, they were ready and raring to go. We presented Brando the magical whiff from Goober’s scratching pad.
Sam gave the magic words “Find the Kitty”. For the next hour and a half Brando had a single-minded purpose, and he did not waver. Sam exhorting “find the kitty” about a dozen times prompted quite the search. Starting at the neighbors porch Brando wound his way along the perimeter of the woods, past the Exxon station, through amazingly enough a car wash. Going past the shopping center I was imagining the worst...how did Goober get this far and where was he going? It has been over two miles travel all in all.
Not once did Brando lose the scent. He was on a mission...”find the kitty”. He finally pivoted...back to the development I live in, Goober was headed towards the house! Unfortunately, Goober could not find home, the woods formed a barrier that Goober did not want to traverse. Brando kept the track, past the entrance of the new development, a half mile from my house. A couple of turns around woods surrounding and dividing the neighborhood Brando kept leading us to the end of the street back to the deck on the model home. Goober had been there! We saw the area were he dug. Goober had sheltered there Monday night during a frightful thunderstorm.
It was difficult to even keep the pace Brando went. Nose down, he led us through storm drains, the gas station, the strip mall, the bank, and the sidewalk near my house...on the other side of the woods.
Tuesday night. I drove by the model home, hopeful Goober would be there. Goober was not under the deck. I started to put fliers on the doors of every resident at that end of the street. Calling his name a couple of times, the third time I heard a distinct “meow”. Another call yielded another meow. It was Goober! Fifty feet from where Brando tracked him to in a storm drain! What joy...my cat was found!
Sam and Brando found my cat! My heart jumped! A tearful and joyful reunion. It would have been days, if not weeks before Goober may have found a way home, if he found it at all.
Pure Gold Pet Trackers found my beloved cat. They are truly that...Pure Gold.
Thanks Sam. Thanks Brando. Thanks Salsa.
Eternally grateful,
